Reception is taught by Mrs Baker and Mrs Menzies, Allen, supported by teaching assistant Miss Slaughter.
As their first year at school, I believe it is crucial to ensure that first and foremost children feel happy and secure coming into school. This year is not only about building the foundations of the curriculum, phonics, literacy, maths, physical development, creative arts, and understanding the world; it is also about encouraging children to become more independent learners. We enable them to learn in ways that excite them as individuals, following their interests and harnessing their curiosity.
Reception has many highlights throughout the year. As well as our range of creative and inspiring topics, we contextualise the learning with trips, visitors, workshops, and themed learning days. To encourage a love of reading and books in Reception we look forward to our story evening where our class comes back into school, once it is dark in their pyjamas to cuddle up and listen to a range of stories in cosy camps around the school.
The children also love dressing up as creepy crawlies at the end of our mini-beast topic and having a day to celebrate all they have learned over the term. We aim to go on at least three trips over the course of the year, building up to our final excursion at the end of the year travelling on the train to London to visit the aquarium. This is a fantastic opportunity to bring their learning to life in an incredible facility.
I am passionate in making your children’s first year of school in Reception as warm, exciting and inspiring as possible. Please feel free to visit our class page to discover more about life in Reception at St.John’s.
